Zilliqa claims to be the world's first public blockchain to rely entirely on a sharded network. This allows it to achieve high throughput and a high rate of transactions per second, which it says solves the scalability issue. Because each shard processes transactions individually, as the network grows and the number of shards increases, the number of transactions that can be processed per second also increases. As well, records are immediately added to the Zilliqa blockchain after being processed, meaning that no additional time for confirmation is required.
Zilliqa seeks to become the blockchain of choice for large-scale enterprise use, including among the advertising, gaming, entertainment and financial services and payments industries. In its 2018 position paper, its team states that the platform "aims to rival traditional centralized payment methods such as VISA and MasterCard."
Both Anquan Capital and Zilliqa Research, the company responsible for developing Zilliqa, hold significant reserves of ZIL.
As of 2021, the Zilliqa network is an active network that runs over millions of transactions each month. The blockchain has also been constantly scaling, going from averaging over 900 blocks produced a day when its main net launched to presently producing over 2500 blocks a day.
Token utility
On its native chain, ZIL functions as both a governance token and as a cryptocurrency for funding the project. Like Bitcoin, Zilliqa's Proof of Work consensus yields block rewards paid out in ZIL token. However, unlike some other blockchains, mining rewards decay over a 10-year period to stabilize Zilliqa's hashrate.
Furthermore, Zilliqa miners can use commercial-grade GPUs for mining instead of dedicated ASIC machines. Given the exceedingly low price at around $0.000023 per transaction, ZIL is well-suited for microtransactions used in various decentralized applications (dApps).
Zilliqa completed a public token sale on the Ethereum network between Dec. 2017 and Jan. 2018. Participants in the sale received ERC-20 Zilling (ZIL) tokens which will be converted to native tokens when the main network launches. The sale had a hard cap of $22.0 million at a price of 116,060 ZIL per ETH. Initially, the project planned to raise up to $20.0 million but adjusted the cap due to the rise in ETH prices.
Only members of the community Slack or Telegram channels before Nov. 29, 2017, were eligible to participate in the sale. Each community member was capped at a total of 2.5 – 5.0 ETH during the sale. Early supporters that provided funding or other support to the project were eligible for an extra 10 – 15% “bonus” allocation on top of the tokens they received through the sale.
