Global internet disruptions reveal the hidden risks of centralization in major cloud platforms.

Over the past six months, three high-profile outages at Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Cloudflare have raised fresh concerns about the structural fragility of the internet, highlighting how deeply global digital infrastructure now depends on a small number of centralized cloud providers.

Internal configuration errors in July, October, and November triggered incidents that cascaded across critical services used by enterprises, consumer apps, fintech platforms, and crypto companies worldwide.

Internal Errors Trigger Global Ripple Effects

Cloudflare ’s popular 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver went offline for about an hour in July after a configuration issue in an older network component caused its IP prefixes to withdraw worldwide. 

The brief outage blocked users and businesses from reaching otherwise-healthy services that rely on Cloudflare DNS, highlighting how a single resolver can ripple across global internet traffic.

Then in October, AWS ’s us-east-1 region, which is one of its largest and most critical hubs, faced a multi-hour disruption following an internal update involving DynamoDB APIs and DNS.

Monitoring showed widespread connectivity issues and slow recovery for dependent services. 

Consumer platforms, payment systems, and enterprise applications all reported significant interruptions, though AWS found no signs of malicious activity. The company later blamed cascading internal dependencies within the region.

In November, Cloudflare experienced another multi-hour outage, this time caused by a bug in its Bot Management system. An oversized configuration file overloaded servers across its network, slowing routing and application performance worldwide. 

Major SaaS platforms, e-commerce sites, developer tools, and media outlets all reported service issues, not from failures in their own systems, but from problems in the shared infrastructure above them.

Economic Stakes and Growing Risk

Cloud outages rarely come with exact cost figures, but downtime can be extremely expensive. Surveys show mid-to-large companies can lose hundreds of thousands of dollars per hour, with top-end losses reaching millions .

Heavy reliance on AWS and Cloudflare magnifies the impact. Financial services, logistics, streaming platforms, and public services all feel the ripple when these critical systems fail. Years of optimizing for efficiency over resilience have left the internet vulnerable as a single glitch has the power to disrupt global traffic.

Artificial intelligence is set to push an already fragile system to its limits.The International Energy Agency projects global data-center electricity use will surge through 2030, driven largely by AI workloads . 

As compute demand grows, reliance on a few centralized cloud providers deepens, increasing the risks of widespread disruption. Recent AWS and Cloudflare outages weren’t caused by capacity limits, but they exposed the brittleness of centralized control in an era of rapidly scaling AI compute.

However, the real problem isn’t a shortage of cloud capacity. It’s centralized control. AWS and Cloudflare outages stemmed from configuration errors that quickly rippled through global systems. 

The internet now relies heavily on a few providers whose internal control planes have become single points of failure, making localized mistakes capable of triggering worldwide disruptions.

A Potential Solution: Decentralized Infrastructure

One way to address this problem is decentralized infrastructure. While it can’t prevent all outages, it can limit their impact.

Rather than binding applications to a single provider, decentralized RPC networks like Lava Network distribute requests across multiple independent providers, continuously monitor performance, and use programmable routing to redirect traffic away from failing regions or vendors.

This approach provides greater backend diversity, builds failover pathways into the network, and prevents a single configuration error from taking down entire systems. 

While Lava is not a replacement for major cloud providers like AWS or Cloudflare, its decentralized, multi-provider RPC architecture illustrates a path forward.

Why This Matters

The lesson from 2025 is clear: relying on a single cloud provider for critical services is inherently risky. With AI driving ever-greater dependence, the internet needs more providers, smarter routing, and distributed systems that can contain failures before they ripple across the globe.
