GM plans to introduce an AI assistant powered by Google Gemini to its vehicles in 2026

General Motors announced on Wednesday at an event in New York City that it will begin equipping its cars, trucks, and SUVs with a conversational AI assistant powered by Google Gemini starting next year.

Introducing Google Gemini is among several technology-focused updates revealed at the GM Forward event, and it will be one of the first new features available to customers. Other innovations, such as a revamped electrical system, a new computing platform, and an automated driving function that lets users take their hands off the wheel and eyes off the road, are not expected to arrive in GM vehicles until 2028.

GM joins other automakers embracing generative AI assistants designed to interact with drivers in a more conversational manner. Stellantis is working with French AI company Mistral, Mercedes is adding ChatGPT, and Tesla has integrated xAI’s Grok into its vehicles.

For GM, bringing Gemini into its vehicles is a natural progression. Models from Buick, Chevrolet, Cadillac, and GMC already feature “Google built-in,” which allows drivers to use Google Assistant, Google Maps, and other apps directly from the infotainment system. In 2023, Google started leveraging its Cloud Dialogflow chatbot to manage non-emergency OnStar services, such as answering common questions about navigation and routing.

It remains uncertain exactly how much more advanced GM’s Gemini-based AI assistant will be. The company has shared limited information, only mentioning that it will support more “natural conversations,” enable drivers to compose and send messages, plan routes with extra stops (like charging stations or favorite coffee shops), and even help prepare for meetings while on the move.

TechCrunch has contacted GM for more information.

This new voice assistant represents a move toward GM’s ambition to develop a proprietary AI system that connects with your vehicle through OnStar, the company’s in-car concierge. According to GM executives at the New York event, the technology is envisioned as a blend between a health wearable and an AI pendant, but designed for your car.

The assistant is expected to access vehicle information to deliver maintenance notifications and route advice, explain features like one-pedal driving, and even pre-condition the climate control before you get in. GM assures that users will have control over what data the assistant can access and that it will learn from your preferences to provide tailored suggestions.

This focus on user privacy and control comes as GM faces scrutiny for its recent practice of selling customer driving and location data to insurance companies.
