According to the Financial Times, OpenAI and Jony Ive are encountering major technological obstacles as they attempt to build an AI-driven device that operates without a screen.

In May, OpenAI purchased io—a hardware startup established by renowned Apple designer Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman—for $6.5 billion. At that point, Altman stated that Ive and his group would assist in “developing a new era of computers powered by AI.” Bloomberg also noted that the initial products from this collaboration were expected to debut in 2026.

The FT now reports that OpenAI and Ive are working toward a “handheld, screen-free device capable of interpreting audio and visual signals from its surroundings and reacting to user commands.” However, ongoing concerns about the device’s “personality,” privacy management, and technical infrastructure could postpone its release.

As an illustration, one insider shared with the FT that instead of waiting for a particular spoken command, the device would function in an “always listening” mode. However, the team has faced difficulties ensuring it only responds when necessary and concludes interactions at suitable moments.
