Regardless of who ultimately takes over, they may be labeled as someone who only carries out Trump's rate-cutting directives, undermining the Fed's traditional image of being "apolitical." Reports suggest that in order to expand his influence in the short term, Trump is considering appointing a "shadow chair" before the current chair Powell steps down next year, to pressure the Fed into cutting interest rates.
