Roblox has reportedly been blocked in Russia, according to local news sources
Roblox Blocked in Russia
Russian authorities have prohibited access to the online gaming platform Roblox, as reported by the country’s state-run media outlets.
Roblox is a platform that allows users to design and share their own games and interactive experiences, much like Minecraft. It supports a wide range of communities based on shared interests, including groups focused on military simulations and LGBTQ support. However, Russian law classifies public advocacy for LGBTQ rights as “extremist activity.”
According to a translated report from TASS, Russia’s state news agency, the nation’s communications regulator cited the existence of LGBTQ-related content on Roblox as a key factor in the decision to block the platform.
When contacted by TechCrunch for a statement regarding the ban, Roblox did not provide a response.
Ongoing Safety and Moderation Issues
This restriction comes at a time when Roblox is already under scrutiny for safety and content moderation. Investigations have revealed that some young users have encountered child predators on the platform. In the United States, Roblox is facing legal investigations by the attorneys general of Texas and Louisiana. In response, Roblox has rolled out age verification and enhanced moderation features to better protect minors. Starting in January, the company will require facial verification for users to access chat functions, though this technology has raised its own privacy and safety concerns.
Controversy Over Sensitive Content
Roblox has also requested that developers label experiences that focus on sensitive social, political, or religious topics. This allows parents of children under 13 to control their access to such content. However, this policy has drawn criticism from advocacy organizations such as Out Making Games, Women in Games, and BAME in Games, which represent marginalized groups in the gaming sector. In an open letter, these groups criticized Roblox for categorizing subjects like “pay equity in sports” as sensitive topics.
“Parental controls are important, but they should not undermine basic human dignity,” the letter stated. “We urge Roblox to rethink these policies and seek solutions that safeguard young users without enabling discrimination or silencing vital perspectives.”
Roblox’s Popularity in Russia
Data from app analytics company Appfigures indicates that Roblox has been downloaded approximately 70 million times on mobile devices in Russia, with around 8 million new installs recorded this year alone.
